Skiddle.com's All Ages 8...
SecondToLast, Kolobos, Ali Bongo and the Meal Makers
By Mark Howlette
The Brickyard, Carlisle. Friday 31st January 2003
Some are saying this was the best all ages to date, it was good but the first all ages is going to be hard to beat. With a new name for the all ages gig (Minority) the doors opened at 7pm or so and by 7.45pm or so there was a good number of people in the Barn, though it dosen't really feel like it due to the size and shape of the place.
First up were Ali Bongo an the Meal Makers. A skate punk 5 piece from all over Cumbria.
They opened the night with a cover of a Pennywise song i cant remember the name of. But it was a good cover anyways. The fact that a lot of people from Carlisle hand't heard of Ali Bongo didnt seem obvious as they got people up dancing.
Aswell as covers (including a cover of a 28 Days tune, again I aint clued up on my punk so I don't know the name of it) the band also had some catchy original stuff, can't remember any of the song names (memory like a sieve).
They looked and played like true skate punkers and they pulled of a really good set in my books. They said they wernt tight but i didnt notice any slackness. The set the night off to a very good start.
Taking the stage next were Kolobos again they are from all over Cumbria. I dont think you can get any more different from the previous band. The 5 piece that is Kolobos ARE metal!!! They have a really heavy sound familiar to that of 'Iron Monkey', with the vocals standing out by far also sounding like that of 'Iron Monkey'.
Although they were tight the only thing I can put the band down about was that a lot of songs do sound the same, I don't know if it's the vocals or what as there was no real singing just some heavy hardcore yelling or whatever. I guess it comes down to taste in music and this wasn't mine.
Not sure of song names but they did play a track which was played on the Radio 1 rock show, and they did manage to get some people up for a short time, though i think people were just wondering what the f**k had hit them, and i dont think Kolobos are well suited to the all ages crowd. A uniqure band to Cumbria who played a good, tight set.
Headlining were emo local bwoys Second To Last, with their tight t-shirts and pants? not forgetting the affros (joke), A familiar name to the all ages crowd now having played a shed load of all ages gigs, this time we saw Steven Ross (guitarist for Dissident) playing for the third and last time? until the band fine a permanent drummer, though in my books they have already found him.
A new song was added to their tight as ever set-list, I think it's unnamed at the moment but it has all the trademarks of Second To Last, aka jangly chords. Also as a change we saw the familar 'In Movies and Motel Rooms...' track coming second to last in the set with the instrumental ending a good night. Other stand-out tracks from their set are 'V.I.S.A' and 'D.C' which show Second To Last at their best.
I've seen this band so many times now, so it gets harder to write about them. Second To Last were their usual selves, tight, energetic and musically superb.
