Skiddle.com's All Ages 8...
SecondToLast, Kolobos, Ali Bongo and the Meal Makers
By Rachel Botterill
The Brickyard, Carlisle. Friday 31st January 2003
Not even snowstorms, blizzards and treacherous driving conditions could keep away the all ages crowd tonight. The turnout was stronger than normal - perhaps people were more curious to see some fresh faces on stageā¦
Ali Bongo and the Meal Makers are a "skate punk" band comprising of 5 guys from Penrith and Kendal. They started their set off with 'Greed' - one of my favourite Pennywise songs, so I was impressed from the very start. They certainly lived up to their description as "punk in all shapes and forms". The tribute to 28 Days was fantastic, and their own songs sounded equally as catchy. The next New Found Glory perhaps? The lead singer reminded me of Jordan Pundik anyway, which I think is a good thing! They got the kids dancing, and who can forget that rockstar moment where the vocalist reached into the crowd to touch the hands of some adoring female fans! The set was suitably long and I enjoyed every moment of it. When can we have these guys back in Carlisle?!
Kolobos blasted on stage and powered through metal song after metal song. The first thing I noticed was the incredible force and energy of the drummer; he played with such intensity and this gave the band a very definitive sound. The band were very tight, very precise and very loud. I have to compliment Animal on his tuneful growling! To disagree with Mark, I thought each song was very different. Kolobos are part of a very distinct genre, and I thought they fitted their expectations well. Not my cuppa tea, but I'm not going to deny their talent.
Do Second To Last need anymore local publicity? Probably not, but here goes anyway. After my recent "allegations" that their sound was following the post hardcore genre, well I apologise. They absolutely kicked ass! The addition of Greg has helped create a fuller sound, and Ste fitted in so well. Their style can now be described as very mature - as far away from the Annoyance days as possible! This is one of the best performances I have seen of STL, which helped make the night the best All Ages I've been to yet. I'm glad I braved the snow and ice to come along. Eleven marks out of ten!
