Control, Kolobos
By David Tattersall
The Brickyard, Carlisle. Sunday 25th May 2003
Control's sound is described by their website as being extreme/hardcore metal, they don't disappoint, they also claim to bring a wide variety of extreme influences to their sound which "combines brutal riffage with excellent melodies".
For the first few songs i had consigned myself to a bog standard boring metal band, the fast parts of Control's songs weren't all that fast and the slow heavy parts weren't exactly heavy, my first impression of them was of an extreme metal band that didn't do anything to the extreme. But then the material seemed to step-up a notch, the pace changes became more pronounced, the guitar screams penetrated the music a bit more clearly and by the end of the set i was watching a small but enthusiastic pit begin to form.
Control reminded me at times of Cannibal Corpse with their low, rumbling death metal style punctuated with highpitched screams from the lead guitarist. Although other influences, especially hardcore punk and more melodic bands were obvious, it's the blending of the two in Control's new music that may determine how big they get. You can listen to two of their songs "Psychopath" and "Nihilist" at their web-site www.control666.co.uk
Kolobos certainly aren't breaking any new ground, they rely heavily on Iron Monkey / Raging Speedhorn influences but they do it very, very well. Throughout their set the band stayed tight and in-time, handling the stop start sections with precision. The vocals were solid throughout and were perfectly suited to the solid, sludgy metal. Kolobos and Nush NEED to play a gig together.
