Nush, Reluctant To Speak, Snooky, ctrlaltdelete

The Tithe Barn, Carlisle. Friday 13th June 2003
After arriving a bit late and missing half of 'Ctrl Alt Delete's' set (fuck, as I've been waiting to see these guys and girl for ages)
'Ctrl Alt Delete' were on stage playing a tune from their self titled demo, I think it was 'Phosphenes' or something.
From what i saw of their set i think they didnt dissapoint the hype that has been stormed up recently about the band. Ctrl Alt Delete brought to the party some quiet/loud rock action, like that of 'Mogwai', with certain songs having explosions of sound. 'Aerogramme' plus 'Mogwai' minus vocals equals 'Ctrl Alt Delete' in my OPINION.
I think for a better viewing pleasure, go see 'Ctrl Alt Delete' at a smaller venue with little or no windows.
Oh i forgot to mention, this was the band's first gig, to me it didnt seem like it was, if i had three thumbs i'd gve them two and half!!!
'Snooky' up next, playing as four instead of five for some reason. I didn't really get into this band, they didnt seem to have much of a stage presence and I think people got bored and lost interest, maybe the size of the Tithe Barn is a bit off-puttinng for some bands, or maybe it was just a bad night for these guys, being a man down an all.
But aside from that that, the music would be as i describe as 'emo', a very loose term these days, laid back rock with some catchy choruses. These guys have probably been listening to 'Saves the Day' and possible 'Incubus?' They seem pritty tight, and the singer seems to have a decent voice.
'Reluctant to Speak' then. As soon as these guys get on stage, everyone moves to the front (give or take a few metres).
If the other two bands never got your attention, this band would as they have an awesome stage presence. There's already a lot of hype about 'Reluctant to Speak' and this is only thse second gig! They opened, closed and played a set of mostly heavy songs, and got the 'pit' goinng for the first time of the night.
As for the vocals, they are raw as fuck, like that of meat in a Botchergate butcher-shop and having two guitarists makes the world of difference.
The drumming is amazing, with some of the best drumming expressions i have ever seen, and as for those bass lines, its 'Edge', nuff' said.
If you like 'Glassjaw' or even 'Finch', you like 'Reluctant To Speak'. Not everyone is going to like them, and not everyone is going to know why people like them, but you'll probably be seeing a lot of these guys soon.
Then you have 'Nush'. After listening to their CD (amazing) I was hoping seeing them live would be AS good, and i Wern't dissapointed.
It's heavy, furious and fast (notice i never said fast and furious - not shit jokes here).
Think early 'Cave In', with some 'Raging Speedhorn' thrown in and you get the idea of what Nush are like.
The vocals, are pure class. You havn't a clue what the guy's saying which makes it even better, and the drumming is what you'd expect from a thrash metal band or whatever; double pedal and a lot of bashing of the snare, oh and some gloves. The bass is beefy, and as for guitar, the guy is amazing, you got to see Nush just for solos.
The are all game for getting the crowd up, with some Nush karoke thrown into their set ('life is wrecked'). Like Reluctant to Speak, Nush were a band people could mosh to, and mosh they did.
Amazing band with a very bright future, the more gigs these guys do the better. Class!
