Cornerstone, Reluctant To Speak, Let Airplanes Circle Overhead
By Lee Smith
The Brickyard, Carlisle. Friday 11th October 2003
It all started when I walked in the door at about 5pm, I smelt a smell that could only be described as putrid! So then I left and came back later on when it had dissipated.
It was now 8:30 and Let Airplanes Circle Overhead had hit the stage. As I looked up I saw a Violin, I thought to myself, “what is this all about”, then they started playing there first song, I knew. Violin guitar bass drums it was all very good some different for Carlisle listeners. I found myself in a trance staring at the stage enjoying each and ever second of there songs.
Third song in was ‘Two Spent Swimmers’, this was my favourite probably because I had heard it before tonight. All in all an excellent show for there first gig, I was very impressed, and so were others in the room.
It was now time for Reluctant to Speak to hit the stage. Unexpectedly they started with a quiet melody which fooled everyone into thinking they were some instrumental ‘mogwai’ cover band. Then came, the amazing energy and all the signs of a band having fun and doing what they love. Guitars all up in the air feet flying all around, and the bass player's hair, one of the many trade marks of this band. The emotion of a song is something I love about all bands, and reluctant to speak had that. They grabbed you by the neck all the way through and didn’t let go till they had finished what they had to say. Very good band, very good night go and see them.
After Reluctant To Speak I didn’t think anyone could top them, and to be honest I was right. As the guitarist from Cornerstone had said to me earlier on that night.
“I wanted to go on before reluctant to speak”
This probably would have been a better idea; although Cornerstone are very good at what they do there sound goes back to the early Foo Fighters. And I have seen them play better, but nether the less this I was a very good night and I enjoyed myself. There set just didn’t give me that kick I was looking for, maybe it’s because it was after such a good band with all that energy. However this is just my opinion so go and see them buy there EP make your own mind up
