Skiddle.com's All Ages 1...
Ketamine, SecondToLast, Joey Cohen Riot, Starla
By Greg Wynne
The Brickyard, Carlisle. Friday 15th March 2002
When we arrived at soundcheck mostly everyone was there. We didn't need to do much setting up, because we were lending Joey Cohen's stuff. So we tuned our guitars and left.
We came back and everything was ready, we lingered about until round bout 7pm then took a look outside . There was a massive (well not that massive ) but a queue stretching quite a distance waiting to get in the venue.
By the time Jamie and me arrived back the hall was packed already. And people were still arriving. You could tell straight away this was gonna be one amazing night.
Starla kicked things off, they opened with a cover of ' Daphene Descends' by the Pumpkins. This band has amazing talent. They know how to play their instruments, unlike us. Although they never really got the crowd a goin, they were warmly received, and deservedly so. They played an array of ordinal material, which rocked, and finished with a excellent cover of 'the Bends' by Radiohead.
Next up was As An Enemy. We didn't expect that much from little Luke's other band, but were we wrong? Yes is the answer , pure instrumental rock power. Sonic Youth meets Shellac. Their set was cut short because of Luke's dumbness. He knocked his volume knob off, and couldn't figure out why it was making no sound. As we say, what a knob. But that knob has produced the best new band on the scene.
(Props also go to David for using a maraca for drumming and John for playing bass with a drumstick)
Highlight: John's drumstick / bass playing antics.
Joey Cohen have vastly improved since their False Profits days . To me they sounded the most practiced and perfect band playing that night. Like Ketamine, they don't stick to one sound, one minute their mellow the next their screaming with feedback oozing.
Not only did they play perfect, sound amazing, and rock out. They trashed the entire stage at the end. This is a real punk rock band.
Highlight: 'Death to Democracy' or 'Imperial soldier' leading to destruction of the equipment.
Second To Last, again played a perfect set of there punk emo hardcore blend. The crowd warmed to this band the most. The pit was ultra hardcore, and the stances produced by Alex and Lee were ultra stadium metal.
This is a band that have the songs and the ability to go far. And they will.
Highlight: When I played bass on their song, hehe. That song is amazing . It gave Lee the chance to surf the crowd and the chance for me and Alex to go crazy.
So far so excellent.
Ketamine took the stage and messed about for what seemed like ages. We couldn't find a drum part, so we just stood about playing a bit of noisery.
Then we kicked off, instantly going out of tune, hehe. I really cannot remember much of this performance. I had my back turned most the time.
But I did catch a glimpse of stage diving, a pit and people enjoying themselves. We enjoyed it.
It finished with 'Mandela', Lee went into the crowd, Luke threw his geetar, I jumped offstage and fell, Jamie made some noises. A perfect end to a perfect night .
Highlight: ermm, can't remember. Jamie thanking all the bands for playing, but forgetting to thank Second To Last.
This gig was all ( Joey Cohen, Second To Last, Ketamine) favourite gig we've ever played.
This was due to the crowd. Thank you.
Then next All Ages is next month, so get ready to rawk \m/
see you there, bye.
