MILLION DEAD, X IS LOADED, YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO
By Alex Macarte
The Brickyard, Carlisle. 18th April 2004
You’d have thought after a week of playing with bands I’d have been sick at thought of seeing another gig, right? Right. But I wasn’t going to let that stop me from going tonight. Besides it’s not often a band like Million Dead play Carlisle and a lot had come to be expected of tonight.
After waiting around for a while (the new Jagermietster machine helped pass the time!) the night started off with Newcastle’s most likely to succeed, yourcodenameis:milo. I heard on the grape vine that these would be disappointing, but fortunately, they were anything but, despite being Geordies! Three guitars making a wonderful, sometimes beautiful, wall of lo-fi indie tinged, post rock. Coming across as a mixture of Radiohead, Trail Of Dead, and even Mogwai in places, they politely gave the Brickyard a taste of their pie. And it tasted good! The frontman’s vocals were perfect and impressively falsetto, reminiscent of Sigur Ros. A great start tonight and they definitely got my taste buds tingling! If only the crowd had been a little more responsive instead of hiding away at the bar. The drummers’ parents had come from Newcastle to seem them for Christ’s sake!
After a little more waiting around and a little more Jagermiester, X is Loaded, took to the stage, kicking it off with a jump from kit to mic from their frontman. I’d read great things about them but unfortunately, in my eyes, they failed to impress.
Their songs, to me, seemed a little bland, and their sound, a cross between Muse and 3 Colours Red, just really didn’t give me the slap in the face I’d been promised. Maybe what bugged me even more was the fact that the singer was blatantly trying to be Scott Andrews of Midasuno, even down to the hair, shirt and guitar, but obviously about ten times less mental. Like watching your dad “rock out” with a tennis racket, “look at me son! I’m Pete Townsend!!” No really dad, you don’t want to say that too loud. I’m not saying that these guys are bad or anything, their musicman ship was second to none, they had catchy tunes and judging by the crowds reaction they must have been doing something right! They just didn’t really do it for me, that’s all. I’ll have to keep my eyes open and see if I can be won round.
The crowd suddenly surged to the front. A tell tale sign that the headliners, Million Dead were about to be unleashed. A sample echoed through the Brickyard and the drummer entered playing a nice sludgy beat as one by one, the rest of the band followed until they were all onstage. After a little introduction, “we always thought Carlisle was crap…” bleats out a very scraggly, bearded, Jesus looking Fred Turner “but your gonna prove us wrong, right?” the band kick straight into MTV 2 fave, I am the Party. The front of the crowd instantainiosly follow suit and cleary, they are the party. Partying like Arabs on hot coals. This was Definitely the band the kids had come to see tonight, and they made it clear with cheers after every song, and singing a long like some sort of choir on speed. For forty minuets or so, Million Dead blasted their jangley political punk at Carlisle and they loved every minute of it. So did I! Although one draw back I had was they seemed to use all their strongest tunes, like “Timmy and the propaganda myth machine” and "Pornography for cowards" first leaving the second half of their set a little weaker in comparison. No worries though things soon got notched back up to gear with a brand new track, giving us a hint at future material, which was great, and the set finished in a blaze of glory!
Definitely a superb gig, proving Carlisle is just as well suited to high profile shows as well as local and more underground ones. Everyone enjoyed themselves (some of us a “little too much perhaps” as the rest of the night unfolded!!) and you could tell the bands did too! Come on Carlisle keep these bookings coming!!!
