TRIBUTE TO NOTHING, SECOND TO LAST
By Mark Howlette
The Brickyard, Carlisle. 15th June 2003
Sunday gigs dont really go down too well in Carlisle, but it seems UK post hardcore legends Tribute To Nothing brought about a change, as the Brickyard had a very healthy turnout.
Second To Last took to the stage first and played one of their best sets to date, I think playing infront of a band they like and respect had something to do with it.
We see the usual songs of D.C.and VISA played from the '...In Movies and Motel Rooms' single, along with others which I cant remember the name of, played hard, dirty and good. Their stage presence is second to none (no punn intended) and for once there were no technical difficulties for which Second To Last are always plagued with, or at least I dont think there was?
This band keep going from strength to strength with influences of Cave In and Hot Rod Circuit? shining through, it wont be long before Second To Last will be headlining thre show and pulling in the crowd. Like I said, this was probably one of the best shows Second To Last have put on to date, if you missed it, you really did miss out.
The headliners, Tribute To Nothing, one of the best live bands in the UK and tonight they showed exactly why. They took to the stage and blew it up with their fercious post hardcore rock sound.
The majority of Tribute To Nothing's set were songs from their recent release 'Act without words' with 'Crossed out', 'My decision' and 'Spoken like code' being the highlights of their set. Their stage presence is unbelivebale and in a league of it's own, it's almost like 6th member of the band. When Tribute To Nothing are on stage you cant help but not site up and take notice of this band.
The best way to describe this band would be as Fugazi's angry cousin who's just been pissed off. It's a shame that Tribute To Nothing don't get as much exposure as they deserve as they have the potential to be massive.
Other highlights include guitarist/singer; Sam balancing a guitar on his back while playing the keyboard and throwing and playing the remainder of a song off stage.
