What would you change about the local scene and how would you change it (no slagging bands off please, serious comments only)

I'd like to see some workshop/ jam types of affairs, there have been a few in some of the smaller pubs and working mens around town, and they are pretty fun, Its a good way to bridge social gaps and meet other musicians.

an addition of a few hundred more gig go-ers and how would you change it? Personally (well mainly Carlisle) I think alot of the bands don't do enough stuff DIY, by that I mean organise their own shows around the local area, they also seem to miss the point of promotion outside of facebook (which is a closed system by the way) I also miss the days when other bands would attend other bands shows regardless of genre no idea how to change these things

Ultimately if we get the right bands we get the numbers through the doors but these 'right bands' are few and far between due to the venue capacity and the fact Newcastle and Glasgow are close by and are the preferred choices for the agents.
I'm not sure what else we can do to get numbers up. I don't think it's lack of promotion as we do as much promotion as our budget allows; postering, mailinglist (3000+), Facebook mail-outs (2500+) and event pages, submitting listings to numerous web sites and sending press releases to all the newspapers in Cumbria and South West Scotland as well as radio. So it's not as if people don't know whats on, I think it's that the majority don't care about live music sadly.
I figured after the One Big Weekend a lot more people would be up for coming to see live music but it appears not. I don't know what else we can do really...
Agreed!

i'd like to see more events like 'moomania' in workington, where theres a dozen or so bands get together and play all day to showcase more obscure bands that are plugging away,im not too sure theres anything like that in carlisle? i could be wrong though.

I also miss the days when other bands would attend other bands shows regardless of genre I do and don't, i found some amazing stuff that i wouldn't neccessarily watch if i didn't know the people, however i also have had to sit through some total catwank. regardless of this i simply can't get out to watch bands that much anymore which is part of the problem too. i also think that support of a local scene usually explodes when there's lots of bands/acts doing similar stuff, which is new and gets people through the doors. I'm at a loss as to what could be done to make things better.

as well as promotion within the area another thing which i think is lacking but maybe just my experience is local radio stations promoting local and close by acts and bands of varing genres etc... such as all the closer cities have a number of small radio stations but even something on like cfm where people can hear the latest live acts and get a taste for the music for someone to find new and decent local acts to go and check out, this i think would be highly beneficial for the local area and also local venues to promote nights and up and coming events its just finding a base for it and someone willing to let the local acts onto the market.

I got in touch with CFM a year or two ago and they said they can only promote/mention charity events. Their policy might of changed since but who really listens to CFM except for taxi drivers and my gran's hairdressers?
As for Radio Cumbria i'm not too sure what their stance is

I think the key thing has been said, more people coming to gigs. Some more random thoughts:
To be honest, Carlisle doesn't have "no scene" or "a rubbish scene". Its exactly the same story everywhere you go, we've played loads of cities and local bands from everywhere complain that the scene in their city is shit, that people are apathetic/snobs/etc. I think theres a wider problem, its probably more noticeable in Carlisle than larger cities because of the size.
I don't think anyone would dispute that the people at The Brickyard do an amazing job. People who think we'd be better off with an O2 Academy or that the yard should be getting more of the big names on would get a shock if they knew how much work was going on, and how little cash was being generated from it.
I think another 5-10 hardworking local bands would be a boost for the local scene. Not an easy one to change though!
There is talk of a festival next year, could be good.
I've tried contacting CFM before, their unwillingness to help the local scene in anyway is shocking. They just pedal the same easy listening shite peppered with 5 minute long ad breaks everyday.
I may add some more ramblings later.

yeh i agree with the more gig goers etc definately but when bands come to the byard and other venues its hard to get the word out unless u know where to look for it. promo isnt anyones problem tis just not reaching the whole audience and its a shame that nothing could be done about it.
its one of those situations that will just hopefully get better over time because with the byard constantly getting a good line up of varing tastes in music they are hitting all the basses.
its just trying to get the crowds to go there!
